Transport animals safely and professionally while working closely with producers and customers across Canada and the United States.
For most of my career, I worked in a typical Monday-to-Friday office job. While it was steady work, I wasn’t feeling fulfilled because I rarely got to see the results of my efforts. I decided it was time for a change, so I earned my Class 1 licence and pursued a career in trucking.
What initially drew me to Steve’s Livestock was their sponsorship program. They put me through driver training at United Transportation Driver Training School and offered me a position upon successful completion. It was an incredible opportunity because it gave me a clear path into the trucking industry with a guaranteed job at the end of my training that suited my interests.
One thing I was a little apprehensive about was the nature of livestock hauling. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I quickly discovered that working at Steve’s is different than I had imagined. A portion of my day is spent actively working with the animals, which I really enjoy. It gives me the best of both worlds—I get to do what I love by driving truck while also staying physically active. Since starting at Steve’s, I’ve lost over 40 pounds, I’m sleeping better, and I feel much healthier overall.
Things I enjoy most are that every day is different which keeps the job interesting. I enjoy driving and seeing new places in Manitoba and Saskatchewan that I would have not normally had the opportunity. At the end of the day, I feel like I’ve accomplished something meaningful, and that’s a great feeling. I also really appreciate the people I work with. The other drivers and dispatchers are friendly, supportive, and always willing to help, making it a great team to be part of.
The biggest challenge for me was learning to work with pigs. I had previous experience handling cattle, but pigs behave differently than I expected. It took some time to understand their movements and learn the best techniques for handling them safely and efficiently. Now that I’ve gained that experience, I’m confident moving them and look forward to the loading and unloading process.
If you enjoy working with animals, love driving truck, and don’t mind a little physical activity, I would definitely recommend working at Steve’s Livestock. It’s been a rewarding career change, and I’m glad I took the opportunity.
